SPEC FacilitySPEC research is conducted in a dedicated 8000 sq. feet research laboratory in NCSU's Centennial Campus. The research laboratory is equipped with the best power electronics and power system equipment that allows the center to conduct experimental power electronics system research from a few watts to more than 5 MVA. The lab is equipped with 500A, 480V three-phase power supply for grid tied high-power research. The lab has a 40 feet high bay area that is suitable for high-voltage research. For power semiconductor device testing and characterization, the center has two pulse power testers that can test devices up to 15 kV and 4 kA. A high power boost converter is also available to test high-power semiconductor devices in continues operating mode. Water cooling and aircooling facility are available. For advanced power semiconductor device design, the center utilizes the industry's best device design CAD tools. Power management IC designs utilize the industry standard Cadence platform for best productivity and accuracy. Device fabrication is supported by a shared, first class semiconductor fabrication facility housed in the ECE department. IC fabrication is carried at foundry facilty (MOSIS, PolarFab, Europractice) or directly at the fab of research sponsors. The ECE department also has a number of laboratories equipped with MOCVD and MBE machines suitable for non-silicon material research such as SiC and GaN. Affiliated Labs At NCSU |
